Contacts

The marmot mummy, found in the Lyskamm glacier in the summer of 2022, is considered the oldest mummified find in Italy and a discovery of considerable interest for the scientific community.
Radiocarbon dating places it geologically in the Middle Holocene (about 6,600 years ago) and with respect to man in the Neolithic (4,691-4,501 BC).

The mummy of the little marmot is today welcomed inside the Regional Museum of Natural Sciences in the castle of Saint-Pierre, in a super-technological case where it can be housed for the next 500 years.

It is the first time that a natural mummy has been found in Aosta Valley (i.e. a body in which the process of decomposition by microorganisms is inhibited by natural causes).A multidisciplinary team of scientists and scholars are working on the Marmot Mummy Project to further investigate the marmot.
