Rifugio Forte di Machaby

Resorts: Arnad

Contacts

Fort Machaby, a 17th-century military fortress now converted into a mountain refuge, stands in a scenic setting among the chestnut forests above Arnad. The property combines the charm of history with comfortable hospitality and a cuisine that showcases local flavours through locally sourced and zero-kilometre products.

The refuge can be reached in about 20 minutes on foot via the historic mule track that starts from the parking area below. This easy and pleasant walk passes through centuries-old chestnut groves and by the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Snows, offering an immersive nature experience suitable for families, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Fort Machaby is also an ideal base for outdoor activities. Nearby are the renowned climbing crags of Arnad as well as several routes suitable for e-bike excursions.

Stage 4 of the Cammino Balteo also passes through here. The route from Arnad to Donnas, via Machaby, is one of the most scenic sections of the entire trail, leading through villages, chestnut woods, historical landmarks and defensive structures that tell the story of the lower Aosta Valley.
