The Castel Savoia Botanical Garden, the most recently inaugurated alpine garden in Aosta Valley, opened in 1990.
It is located within the grounds of the castle of the same name, at an altitude of 1,400 metres, overlooking the majestic Monte Rosa mountain range.
The garden features a series of rock beds displaying typical alpine plants, both native species and plants from other parts of the world, selected for their exceptional ornamental value. Among the species on display are:
- the Edelweiss, the iconic flower of the Alps;
- Rosebay Willowherb, commonly found along mountain trails and the banks of the Lys stream;
- the Martagon Lily;
- the Alpine Rose (Rusty-leaved Rhododendron);
- and many other species, including Double Buttercup, Columbine, Arnica, various Houseleeks, Gentians renowned for their medicinal properties, and Saxifrages.
The garden can be visited during the castle's opening hours. A visit is especially recommended in July and August, when the plants are in full bloom, allowing visitors to fully enjoy their spectacular display of colours and fragrances.
