Fénis - Châtillon
Resorts: Chambave, Châtillon, Fénis, Verrayes
A good portion of this walk overlaps with the Via Francigena trail. It spreads over the south-facing slope, staying above the river and state road 26. Passing through the municipalities of Nus, Verrayes and Chambave, it leads to Châtillon, winding through vineyards, vegetable gardens and medieval splendours.
Route
From Fénis you will reach the neighbouring municipality of Nus heading for the hamlet of Plantayes.
Follow the signs for the nearby villages of Perrinaz and Rovarey and then pass into the territory of the municipality of Verrayes. After the hamlet of Cretaz, a half-hour detour on foot (trail marker 1-3, to be taken at the hairpin bend) allows you to reach the ancient chapel of Marseiller.
You then continue on to Chambave, a land of great and noble wines including, above all, the well-known Muscat.
Watched over by the turreted mass that is Cly Castle (in the municipality of Saint-Denis), along the route of the ancient Via Francigena, you’ll pass through the historic hamlet of Chambave and then continue through the middle of meadows and picturesque abandoned villages until you get to the hamlet of Breil di Châtillon, where you can visit Gamba Castle - if you like - which is home to modern and contemporary works of art from the region.
From here it will only take a few minutes and you’ll be in the centre of Châtillon without any problems.
