Railway station - Castle of Ussel

Resorts: Châtillon

Short hike to the hamlet of Ussel and its panoramic castle

Technical Information

Route

Park at Châtillon railway station and walk slightly downhill. After the railway underpass, continue straight (do not turn left) and cross the Dora Baltea bridge towards Pontey. Immediately after, take trail no. 1 on the left, which climbs steeply through a paved forest path up to a small votive chapel.
Here, stay left on the gentle descent: you will reach the first houses of Ussel. Go down a few meters and turn right onto the municipal road, then leave it near the dirt road where Chez Nous restaurant is located. After about 10 minutes you reach the Castle of Ussel, offering a beautiful view of Châtillon, Saint-Vincent, Torgnon and Mount Zerbion.

Longer circular route:
From the castle, go down into the village and take trail no. 8 to the right of the church (near the fountain). Walk through the forest on a diagonal descent until you reach the Dora Baltea river. Continue left on the dirt road, cross the bridge, pass under the motorway pillars and arrive at Tenso, where Saint-Vincent railway station operated until 1995.
Go down the road: at the sign for the hamlet “Tous”, after the underpass, turn right near the water treatment plant and follow the Dora Baltea trail, which runs along the river and leads back in about an hour to Châtillon station.
