The Bataille de Reines is one of the most authentic and cherished traditions of the Aosta Valley, a major popular event that attracts thousands of spectators, enthusiasts, and tourists every year.
The stars of the event are the Reines (“Queens”), the traditional red- and black-coated cattle breeds of the Aosta Valley that, following their natural instinct for hierarchy, challenge one another in horn-to-horn contests to establish the dominant cow of the herd. These are spontaneous and non-violent encounters that reflect the proud character of these animals and the deep bond linking the mountains, farming, and local communities.
From this natural behaviour arose a tradition that has become, over time, one of the most representative symbols of Valle d’Aosta’s identity, passing on values, passion, and rural culture from generation to generation.
The season culminates in the Regional Final at the Croix Noire Arena in Aosta, the most eagerly anticipated event of the year, where the best Queens selected during the qualifying competitions held throughout the region compete for the title.
A celebration filled with emotion, pride, and community spirit, honouring the Alpine heritage and the strong connection between the Aosta Valley and its traditions.
