Ovens and Mills of Rhêmes-Saint-Georges

Resorts: Rhêmes-Saint-Georges

The bread ovens and mills of Rhêmes-Saint-Georges are valuable testimonies to Alpine rural life and to the central role these structures once played in mountain communities. Built and maintained collectively by the inhabitants of the villages, they now represent an important historical and architectural heritage.

Among the ovens are those of Proussaz, Frassiney, Coveyrand, Voix, Le Créton, Mélignon and Vieux, the latter still used today for the traditional baking of rye bread. The oven is fired up both for community baking sessions and during events such as the Rye Festival and, in October, Lo Pan Ner - The Breads of the Alps. Each building features distinctive architectural elements that reflect its function and evolution over time.

The area is also home to the mills of La Fabrique, Voix, Frassiney and Proussaz, powered by the waters of the Dora di Rhêmes and traditional irrigation channels. Many still preserve original features, including millstones, water channels and the characteristic wooden spoon-shaped water wheels, offering a fascinating insight into the traditional processing of cereals.

Discover the itineraries dedicated to the culture of bread and rye, a tradition that has shaped the identity of Rhêmes-Saint-Georges for centuries.
